Recognized for his pragmatic and creative approach, Julien is one of the leading French Patent Attorneys in the field of mechanics and electronics. He advises a wide range of clients, from SMEs to multinational corporations, as well as start-ups, universities and research institutes across France and Europe, on matters related to industrial property rights.
Within our mechanical/electronics team, which he co-leads, Julien advises numerous French and international clients with all patent-related matters, from drafting to prosecuting both domestic and foreign patent applications. He also provides freedom to operate opinions and conduct patent validity assessments. Julien has gained substantial experience in proceedings before the European Patent Office (EPO), and frequently represents his clients in opposition and appeal proceedings.
He is involved in patent litigations in France where he joins a team of patent lawyers of CASALONGA. He regularly organizes and assists the bailiffs in infringement-seizure operations to find evidence of patent infringement. He also represents clients in litigation before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
Additionally, he frequently drafts and negotiates know-how license agreements.
Julien has been practicing for over 20 years in the fields of mechanics, materials, acoustics, nuclear energy, renewable energy (wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, hydroelectric plants, biomass), climate engineering (heating, air conditioning, ventilation), and environmental technologies (environmental performance assessment and impact evaluation).
He also works in the fields of physics, civil engineering, construction, optics, instrumentation, 3D printing, packaging, materials and medical devices and equipment, tooling, energy, transportation (automotive, rail, aerospace), tires, connected objects, digital signal processing, and systems and networks.
Julien began his career with CASALONGA in 2003 and is partner since 2015.
Professional organizations
Julien Thon is a member of the French Patent and Trademark association (Compagnie Nationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle – CNCPI), the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and the Rhône-Alpes Group for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRAPI).
Within the European Patent Institute (epi), he has was elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024 as a full member of the European Patent Practice Committee
(EPPC), which considers and discusses all questions pertaining to, or connected with, practice under the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) including any revision thereof.
Julien has also been an associate member of the Mechanics subcommittee of the EPPC.
