Starting in December 2025, craft and industrial products will benefit from EU-wide protection with the entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2023/2411.
Inspired by the model already in place for agricultural and wine products, this new regulation extends to the EU level a system that has existed in France since the 2014 Hamon Law, which established Geographical Indications for Industrial and Craft Products (IGPIs).
Products eligible for this protection are those that :
- - originate from a specific place, region, or country,
- - have a quality, reputation, or other characteristic essentially attributable to their geographical origin, and
- - undergo at least one stage of production in the defined geographical area.
This development marks a significant milestone in the promotion of local know-how across the European Union.
Iconic products such as Limoges porcelain (France), Murano glass (Italy), or Solingen knives (Germany) will now be able to gain recognition and protection throughout the EU.
