28 October 2019- Brexit again delayed, this time until 31 January 2020 at the latest

On Monday 28 October, the 27 EU Member States agreed to grant a further extension to the UK’s departure from the EU, thus avoiding a “no deal Brexit” which could have occurred on 31 October without this new extension.

This new extension is in response to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s request, following a specific law voted for such an extension by the House of Commons. However, no majority was found to approve the amended withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the EU.

Also, the majority of the House of Commons appears to be against a « no-deal » brexit.

In view of the continuing difficulties encountered by the UK government before the House of Commons, the Prime Minister Mr Boris Johnson wanted to organize new elections on 12 December. This was approved by the House of Commons on Tuesday 29 october. After those elections, Mr Boris Johnson hopes to have a majority to approve the amended withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the EU.

The whole story is indeed confusing, but it now seems that a « no-deal » brexit will be avoided thus eliminating the very serious economic consequences that would have occurred in case of the UK abruptly leaving the EU.
