30 September 2021: end of the last deadline for the extension to the United Kingdom of the protection of EU trade marks and Community designs

EU trade marks and Community designs pending registration as of 31 December 2020 did not automatically generate comparable UK trade marks or design rights. The deadline to extend protection, while retaining the EU or Community filing/priority dates, ends on 30 September 2021.

31 January 2020 - The United Kingdom leaves the European Union

After having obtained a substantial majority in the House of Commons following the last elections, Prime Minister Johnson succeeded in obtaining the full approval of the preliminary withdrawal agreement negotiated with the EU. The European parliament also approved this agreement by a large majority. The consequence of this political situation is the UK’s effective exit from the EU on Friday 31 January, 2020. Nevertheless, nothing will change during a transitory period, which expires at the end of December 2020, when the definitive agreement ruling the relations between the UK and the EU, should be finalized.

28 October 2019- Brexit again delayed, this time until 31 January 2020 at the latest

On Monday 28 October, the 27 EU Member States agreed to grant a further extension to the UK’s departure from the EU, thus avoiding a “no deal Brexit” which could have occurred on 31 October without this new extension.
