It appears from the most recent ICANN meeting in Paris on June 23 that the current system will be significantly modified to will allow individuals to create the web address extensions of their choice.
If this proposal is put into effect as of January 2009 as intended, trade mark owners should reserve the web extensions that correspond to each of their important trade marks.
It may also be possible to create extensions for generic names, for example “bread” for a baker. In the case of conflicts over the ownership of these generic domain names, an auction will take place and the domain name will be attributed to the highest bidder.
Casalonga Avocats has been recognized as one of the leading specialists in the contentious category (enforcement, litigation and licensing), both for patents and trademarks by Managing Intellectual Property in its 2008 global survey of intellectual property (IP) firms.
Managing Intellectual Property’s ranking of IP specialists, now in its 12th year of publication, is based on the annual survey that it conducts of private practice and corporate IP specialists worldwide in more than 65 countries.
“This ranking confirms the importance of creating a law firm specialised in intellectual property law that is closely associated with a patent and trademark attorney firm” affirms Jean-Christophe Guerrini, a partner with Casalonga Avocats.
